This six acre food forest began with Josanna's dream.
We are certified organic, off grid, and low impact.
We share food, skills, and real farm life together.
Our story begins with Josanna, a young farmer whose life ended suddenly in a car accident. This land was her place of learning and joy, and we, her family, chose to keep it alive by feeding people. Every papaya, every tour, every shared meal carries her name.
Since 2005 we have slowly shaped this jungle into a diversified food forest, staying fully organic and running on solar. Over twenty years as WWOOF hosts, we have trained more than a thousand students in real day to day farm work, soil care, and respectful living with this rain fed land.
Hawaiian Retreat is run by Janelle, who tends the trees, hosts guests, and cooks what the orchard gives. The days here are simple - pruning, harvesting, teaching, and sharing meals with whoever's gathered around the table. The farm crew helps keep things running, from the fruit stand to the garden beds, and together we maintain what Josanna started. When you stay here, you join that rhythm and become part of her ongoing story.
A living food forest where legacy, learning, and daily farm life meet.
Hawaiian Retreat is led by Janelle, chef and organic master gardener, who has been stewarding this land and feeding people from it for decades. She turns whatever the orchard offers into nourishing meals - vegan, vegetarian, macrobiotic, Ayurvedic, or just plain delicious. Josanna's family still walks these rows, anchoring the farm in her memory and spirit. A rotating crew of farm hands, WWOOF students, and longtime helpers keep the fruit stand stocked, the gardens tended, and the off-grid systems running. When you visit, you don't just meet hosts - you share space with people who truly live here, who remember stories tree by tree, and who enjoy showing curious guests how real farm life feels.
A mature, certified organic food forest, shaped slowly through years of tending, teaching, and feeding neighbors.
Screened cottages sit inside real orchards, with birds, frogs, and rain as your nightly soundtrack and neighbors.
Two decades of WWOOF hosting mean you see working systems, real soil care, and daily hands on practice.
Solar power, careful water use, and pesticide free food offer a grounded way to travel with lighter impact.
